WHAT TO DO IN PUNTA SAL AND NEARBY BEACHES

SURF AT MANCORA AND NEARBY BEACHES

The Peruvian north coast has excellent conditions for water sports, especially those that depend on the perfect waves and wind. Surfing in Mancora is almost a religion: from small local children to seniors from Lima, living here in front of the warm beaches of northern Peru.

Most of the more than 20 different points on the beaches of Piura and Tumbes are lefts hand, the most perfect when wind conditions and swell direction are ideal.

KITESURFING AND WINDSURFING ON MANCORA AND NEARBY BEACHES

The north of Peru has extraordinary aquatic conditions, whether you’re looking for perfect waves or reliable wind. Surfing in Mancora (photo) is like a religion that is practiced by everyone, from local kids to older people from Lima who live on these warm Peruvian shores.

As far as kitesurfing, the beaches of Mancora are practically virgin to the sport. The combination of perfect waves and strong winds makes this an ideal place for this new discipline. The “windy” seasons are from April to December, the most constant wind are on August, September and October.

At beaches like Lobitos the wind season is more intense, almost all year you can practice kitesurfing, except some days or weeks on January and February.

DIVING AND FISHING

Thanks to the mix of the cold Humboldt Current and the warm El Niño (or Ecuadorian) Current, here at the coast of Piura and Tumbes we can find many different marine species. Plus there is a place call “Banco de Mancora”, which it lodges an important amount of marine flora and fauna.

In the coastal area of Piura and Tumbes most divers go in search of grouper or Fortuno, fine large fish that usually roam the coast of Mancora, not many yards from the shore and in some bajos known only by local divers.
Although visibility is not comparable to the Caribbean Sea for example, is sufficient to spot different types of fish listed above. A good day visibility can reach up to approximately 7 meters and an average day reaches 4 m approx.

The preferred divers sectors are at Pocitas, also in the area known as Bajerio Peña Mala at Vichayito beach, and south Cabo Blanco. Towards Tumbes, Punta Sal is recognized as a good spot of diving and fishing, as well as some bajos off the beach known as Peña Redonda. We recommend you go with a guide or local diver for a better location.

WHALE WATCHING

Whale Watching Season in Mancora and nearby beaches as Los Organos, Cabo Blanco and Punta Sal (Tumbes and Piura beaches) is one of the most incredible activities on the northern coast of Peru. Look closely at these gigantic animals, weighing several tons with docile and harmonious movements, it is one of those experiences that you will remember for a lifetime

RESTAURANTS

In Mancora and beaches nearby there is an interesting cooking style, largely determined by the freshness, quality and variety of seafood that is extracted from its shores. From tuna to fine grouper, shrimp shells to the coveted black mangroves grow in Tumbes, this long list of seafood mixed with the taste of the northern Peruvian cuisine, with challenging mixtures like the typical Majarisco (photo), hot dish based on green bananas and local seafood (shrimp, black shells, crabs, squid and octopus)

The ceviche is the emblem plate in Mancora and surrounding beaches; the freshness of a sea bass or grouper (mero murique) ceviche, always served 100% fresh, with camote (sweet potatoes) and chifles(fried slices of banana). Another amazing stew of northern cuisine is the vigorous Parihuela, a fish stock with all local seafood, including sometimes a lobster.
